The 48 Hour Film Project is a contest in which teams of filmmakers are assigned a genre, a character, a prop, and a line of dialogue, and have 48 hours to create a short film containing those elements. Shortly after the 48 hours of filmmaking, the films from each city are then screened at a theater in that city.The Project was inspired by The 24 Hour Plays.

It has existed since 2001.It was created by Mark Ruppert and is produced by Ruppert and Liz Langston. In 2009, nearly 40,000 filmmakers made around 3000 films in 76 cities worldwide.

Related Competitions In 2003, the creators of the 48 Hour Film Project created the National Film Challenge, which is an annual three-day film competition with roughly the same structure as the 48 Hour Film Project, except that the films are mailed in when completed and then screened on-line, rather than being shown in movie theater in the local city.

In 2008, this competition was opened to filmmakers from around the world and although the name was not officially changed, the runner-up hailed from Utrecht, Netherlands.The founders and organizers say that the NFC offers a time-based film-making competition to participants around the world, including those who are not close to a 48 Hour Film Project participating city.

The organizers of the Auckland competition split off from the 48 Hour Film Project after the 2003 competition and formed 48HOURS, which is now a wholly separate organization that runs a similar competition in New Zealand. In Finland 48 Hour Film Project was arranged once in 2008, but new competition started at 2010 with name Uneton48 (Sleepless48).

In 2006, the producers of the National Film Challenge began the International Documentary Challenge (also known as the Doc Challenge) in which participating filmmakers produce a documentary in five days. In 2011, 48 Go Green split off from 48 Hour Film Project to become a separate, independent organization. 48 Go Green had a similar style of competition.

About Mariama Diallo
Mariama Diallo is a writer and filmmaker who lives in Brooklyn, New York. Mariama won a Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Travel Fellowship to shoot the documentary project “I Saw a Cross,” which is currently in post-production and is being produced by filmmaker Terence Nance. Along with director Frances Bodomo, Mariama cowrote “Everybody Dies!” which formed part of the ‘Collective:Unconscious’ omnibus that premiered at 2016’s SXSW Film Festival and which The New Yorker’s Richard Brody described as “a sharply satirical parody.”
Mariama graduated in 2010 from Yale University as a Film Studies and Political Science double major. This course of study laid the foundation for a cinematic approach that seeks to integrate social and political themes into film.

To Catch A Dream is a striking new film from Kenyan multidisciplinary art collective The Nest in collaboration with their in-house fashion initiative Chico Leco. The beautiful short stars Kenyan model Ajuma Nasenyama in the lead role of a grieving widow plagued by recurring nightmares. In her quest to rid herself of the nightly terror Ajuma relies on a long forgotten urban legend which causes her to transcend the physical realm to face the ghosts of her past in the afterlife. Featuring stunning designs from eight local fashion houses, scenes from the film were shot in Magadi, Lake Naivasha as well as various locations throughout Nairobi. To Catch A Dream was written and directed by Nairobi-based visual artist Jim Chuchu–whose feature-length debut Stories of Our Lives was one of our Top Film of 2014– with creative direction by stylist Sunny Dolat. Kati Kati is a 2016 Kenyan drama film directed by Mbithi Masya. Kati Kati is a co-production of One Fine Day Filmsand Ginger Ink. At the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, Kati Kati won the Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) for the Discovery programme. It was selected as the Kenyan entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated.
Plot
Without any recollection of what happened before, young Kaleche finds herself in the middle of the wilderness. She makes her way to Kati Kati, a nearby lodge, where she meets a motley crew of residents under the leadership of Thoma. They inform her that she is dead and won’t be able to leave Kati Kati. She quickly assimilates into the group and together they enjoy Kati Kati’s luxurious distractions. Kaleche soon realizes that afterlife is not only fun and games, every member of the group seems to still carry a burden from their previous life. Mikey, a recent graduate and basketball enthusiast with a history of self-harm, is struggling with leaving his mother behind. When he is finally capable of letting her go, Mikey transitions out of his existence at the lodge. Kaleche becomes curious about the now apparent possibility of transition. She questions the reclusive painter King, formerly a priest who died in a post election violence revenge attack. Kaleche learns about a strange condition which renders the lodges residents flesh cold, white and lifeless.

When Kaleche reveals to Toma that her skin has begun to whiten, Thoma confronts King, blaming him for Kaleche’scondition and revealing that King was killed in a revenge attack because he let his own parishioners burn to death outside his church. Later that night, Kaleche finds King, outside his cottage, burning his possessions, his skin white from head to toe and his eyes blackened.To Kaleche’s horror and surprise, King walks straight out into the darkened nowhere, no longer bound by Kati Kati.
Since Kaleche’s arrival, affections between her and Thoma had been growing daily, but when both share an intimate moment it comes to an abrupt end. During a group session, Grace reveals to Kaleche that Thoma has known all along who she is, as they were married in their previous lives. Kaleche confronts Thoma who reveals that his drinking led to a fatal car crash. The rest of the residents are taken back by Thoma’s revelation and believe that he has been holding all of them back. Dragged through the place by the angry mob, Thoma begins to settle with his fate, believing that he is beyond redemption. Kaleche breaks through the mob, and embraces Thoma. An unspoken act of forgiveness allows Thoma to find peace and transition.

Ruth Carter has created costumes for some epic films, Amistad, Malcolm X and Selma among them, but nothing prepared her for the size and scope of Black Panther. For the super-stylish superhero film opening Feb. 12, she imagined a new African diaspora with 700 costumes fusing futurism, indigenous dress and high fashion, using research that spanned from the Rose Bowl Flea Market to textile dealers in Accra, Ghana.

The Ryan Coogler-directed film brings to the big screen Marvel Comics’ first black superhero, reinventing the circa 1966 character for today. Black Panther is depicted as T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), who rules over the fantastical African country of Wakanda, rich with vibranium, a mythic metal that is woven into the superhero’s sleek black, repeating triangle-pattern suit (designed by Marvel’s Ryan Meinerding), and has allowed the population to make technological advances nearly a century ahead of the rest of the world. The fight for vibranium is at the heart of the story, with T’Challa defending the kingdom against Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger.

Carter worked with five illustrators, 14 designers, mold makers, fabric dyers, jewelry makers and more. “It was an army,” the costume designer says. On her mood boards were images of African dress from the Maasai, Tuareg, Turkana, Xhosa, Zulu, Suri and Dinka peoples (including a men’s glass bead, animal skin and cowry shell corset from the Metropolitan Museum of Art), as well as piercings and body art, and more abstract examples of drapery and beading. She also examined fashion by avant-garde pleating master Issey Miyake, African-style vintage pieces by Yves Saint Laurent and Donna Karan.

The Last Animals is a story about an extraordinary group of people who go to incredible lengths to save the planet’s last animals. The documentary follows the conservationists, scientists and activists battling poachers and transnational trafficking syndicates to protect elephants and rhinos from extinction. From Africa’s frontlines to behind the scenes of Asian markets to the United States, the film takes an intense look at the global response to this slaughter and the desperate measures to genetically rescue the Northern White rhinos who are on the edge of extinction.
The film is directed by photojournalist Kate Brooks.

Kate Brooks is an American photojournalist who has chronicled conflict and human rights issues for nearly two decades. In 2013 she was awarded a Knight Wallace Fellowship at University of Michigan where she researched the poaching crisis before directing The Last Animals.

Conflict photographer Kate Brooks turns her lens from the war zones she is used to covering to a new kind of genocide- the killing of African Elephants and Rhinos- in this sweeping and sobering expose of an underreported crisis. Thank you For The Rain Film

Five years ago Kisilu, a Kenyan farmer, started to use his camera to capture the life of his family, his village and the damages of climate change. When a violent storm throws him and a Norwegian filmmaker together we see him transform from a father, to community leader to an activist on the global stage.

Thank You For The Rain addresses a range of issues linked to climate change, including climate justice, urbanization, gender equality, education, access to water, climate refugees, and adaptation.

This film is a collaborative film made by Kisilu Musya, a Kenyan farmer, climate fighter and video diarist, and Julia Dahr, a Norwegian filmmaker and activist. Living in completely different parts of the world, Kisilu and Julia found each through this project, and have been working together for more than five years to complete Thank You For The Rain.

Kisilu: “I had never met a filmmaker before I met Julia and never even seen a full film as I live very remotely with no electricity. It was very interesting to see Julia’s way of working and how she thought my community’s story was so important to the world. When the film team asked if they could stay with me and my family for a month to film, I said yes without any hesitation. But I had one condition: That I could also get a camera to tell my story together with the filmteam.”

Julia: “In my opinion Kisilu having his own camera is what makes this film so special. Kisilu is extremely brave and generous with the audience in his video diaries. He truly gives the audience everything to make sure they feel and understand his fighting spirit and the psychological challenges that he and his community is going through because of climate change. I am proud that we’ve together managed to make a story of hope from the frontline of climate change.”

Kisilu: “Now we are looking forward to bring this film to communities around the world and strengthen the global climate justice movement. I have already started using parts of the film in my own farming community, screening it in schools and churches to engage and share knowledge on how we can build climate resilient communities. 18 Hours Film

18 Hours is a 2017 Kenyan fictional film written and directed by Njue Kevin and starring Nick Ndeda, Brian Ogola and Sue Wanjiru. The film follows a rookie paramedic who survives 18 hours in an ambulance for the life of a road accident casualty who is denied admission into hospital.

Zach “Nick Ndeda” works for Raven paramedics services. His job is to handle emergency cases. An emergency call comes in from a witness about an accident that along Highway 89. A pedestrian has been involved in a high speed hit and run while on his way home from work.

Assigned head of the rescue, Zach and his driver Mark “Brian Ogola”dash out of their base and in about 20 minutes, they arrive at the scene. The casualty (whom we make a deliberate action to not see his face) is bleeding from the head and not moving.

Zach and Mark get the casualty into their ambulance and soon after, they are on their way to different hospitals. Joined by Sabina (the casualty’s wife), they each take turns watching over the casualty as they ensure he has sufficient oxygen all the time.

Marred by chaos, Zach’s is determined to keep the victim alive 18 Hours after the accident.

Production

A Handheld documentary-style film, the directors approach was to film 18 hours in long takes. Since the film takes place in a definite scope of time, shooting in real time added to it an authentic atmosphere. This kind of filming in mind, as opposed to a lot of cutting; ensures the viewer gets fully immersed in the narrow spaces of an ambulance. Creating a claustrophobic feel to the picture.

The visual style seeks to create a portrait-like narrow field of vision giving the viewer an intimate look at the character Zach whose journey we shall follow for the entirety of the film. Zach’s fears make him vulnerable, so, visual elements including low-key lighting, striking use of light and shadow, overexposure and unusual camera placement is something explored in the film.

The score, an original piece by Jacktone Okore, is composed to match the emotional authenticity of the film. The accident victim unable to speak for a majority of the film, and with the film’s little dialogue; the viewer will be soothed, encouraged and like the Victim… given the will to live.

Release

18 Hours is scheduled for a cinema release from 10th November throughout Kenya and East Africa. There after, the film will be available across Africa on select VOD platforms. The film will later make a tour across Europe and North America through a selected list of international film festivals.
