What started as ‘the attire’ for the elite is now a must-have prized possession in every woman’s wardrobe. Cocktail dresses were tailormade for fancy events in the early 19th century. And, just like everything else, cocktail dresses are not just confined to just the most expensive closets anymore. It bridged a huge gap and answered a lot of questions on what to wear for weddings, engagement parties, reunions, etc. during the day or less formal yet prim clothing for evening parties.
Thanks to the novelty of talented designers, your options are only endless. You can hover around carefully and pull-off dresses that might not be a textbook definition of a cocktail dress. However, for that, you need first to understand the rules and rituals before you break them. And, that’s what this article is going to help you with. A guide to women’s cocktail dressing, and most importantly the Dos And Don’ts of it.
What Is Cocktail Attire? Simply put, cocktail attire is nothing but formal clothing but far more celebratory. It is casual than your office wear and tad bit formal than your regular casual attire. More often than not, if you are expected to show up in cocktail attire, the invitation will say so. If it does not, then you need to understand that events like anniversaries, reunions, engagements, weddings, etc. are all your typical occasions for cocktail attires. What Is A Cocktail Attire For Women A general rule of thumb for a cocktail dress is that it cannot be skimpy, transparent, too short or too long. Basically, the stuff that falls in between the formal and casual spectrum. Anything from a classic little black dress (LBD) to an A-line, strapless, embellished, lace or long sleeves midi dresses are your safe bets. We will discuss more on this in a bit.
Follow this simple 8 rules for Cocktail Attire for Women

This Golden Globes red carpet was not a fashion show, but a show of power. The cynics dismissed a black dress code as a lazy form of protest against harassment and gender inequality, but when it happened, many of those watching felt the impact. With an almost airtight blackout and a sea of Time’s Up pins, the images from this year’s ceremony spoke of women in terms of power and solidarity rather than glamour or competition.
With their dresses and their dates, Hollywood’s female stars demonstrated that there will be no ‘business as usual’ after sexual harassment scandal
This was a dazzling kind of blackout. There was Angelina Jolie in feather-trimmed black tulle, arm-in-arm with her teenage son Pax sporting his Time’s Up pin. Reese Witherspoon and Emma Stone stood (bare) shoulder to shoulder with Billie Jean King, founder of the Women’s Tennis Association, whom Stone portrays in Battle of the Sexes. Claire Foy and Mat Smith, stars of The Crown, wore matching tuxedos; Laura Dern, in black Armani, stood with Monica Ramirez, a campaigner who fights sexual violence against farmworkers.
This was not so much a silent protest as a multimedia one. Natalie Portman inserted two pointed words – “all-male” – into the list of best director nominees she read out on stage; she also, like many other female attendees, chose to be photographed on the red carpet arm in arm with other women, rather than squired by her husband. Those images of groups of women – Portman with Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and America Ferrara; Eva Longoria clutching Reese Witherspoon with one hand and reaching for Salma Hayek with the other – have a simple visual power which will reach a different demographic than those who stayed up to toast the night’s speeches.
The 2018 Golden Globe Awards took over Hollywood on Sunday night, where dozens of celebrities—from Reese Witherspoon to Gal Gadot to Emma Stone—wore black as part of the #TimesUp movement, a protest against widespread sexual assault and harassment in the entertainment industry. Several men, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, also joined the “blackout,” which turned the Golden Globes into a political event that called for end of sexism and harassment in Hollywood.
If anyone thought the call to wear black on the Golden Globes red carpet would detract at all from the magic of fashion, these 11 gowns and the women wearing them will make you think again. Thanks to bold details, beautiful silhouettes, and eye-catching finishes, each of these gowns is as unique as the actress wearing it, while standing proudly in solidarity with the Time’s Up movement.
In fact, we’d argue, this red carpet and these standouts are among some of the best dresses in Globes red carpet history, thanks both to the breathtaking details and the message each black dress stands for.
With plenty of Hollywood’s stars coming together to support the black dress initiative (a protest against sexual harassment that might extend to future red carpets, too), we were prepared for a 2018 Golden Globes that struck a different tone. As far as fashion was concerned, this year women skipped out on all the glamour and forwent risky designs for looks more muted in tone.
Collectively, that made for quite the statement — as did the Time’s Up pins spotted among the crowd. These special accessories were brought to life by Reese Witherspoon and spoke to the message of the evening in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. As you can see, while we still watched to see what everyone wore, we were also in tune to the motive behind the style code. It was plain proof that clothes can hold a lot of weight.
Ahead, see every arrival of the night, then check out the stunning jewels and accessories
Women and men are wearing black to the Golden Globes, and Dakota Johnson walked the red carpet in a glittery black Gucci gown and sparkling Nirav Modi jewelry. It wasn’t until she turned around, however, that we fully appreciated the look. The back featured a crystal-embellished bow design, and completely left us stunned. Read on to see Dakota’s gorgeous gown
As she accepted the Cecil B DeMille Lifetime Achievement award, Oprah gave a powerful speech about sexual harassment, racial injustice and press freedom Oprah Winfrey brought the Golden Globes audience to their feet with a powerful speech as she accepted the Cecil B DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunday night.
After an introduction by Reese Witherspoon, the actor and philanthropist took to the stage to address racial injustice and sexual abuse on an evening in which women wore black to show support for the #MeToo movement.
Oprah Winfrey takes on sexual predators in Golden Globes speech: ‘Their time is up
Winfrey said: “In 1982, Sidney received the Cecil B DeMille award right here at the Golden Globes and it is not lost on me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this same award. It is an honor – it is an honor and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them and also with the incredible men and women who have inspired me, who challenged me, who sustained me and made my journey to this stage possible.”
The ASFAs is an African fashion award ceremony that celebrates and acknowledges fashion industry stakeholders.
The fifth edition of the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards (ASFAs) 2017 with Ciroc, under the theme “African Fashion is the Future #FashionTakeover” were exactly that: the biggest ever convergence of African fashion’s big hitters.
These ranged from South African fashion king David Tlale, outstanding Nigerian designer Mai Atafo who was also honoured with the Style Icon Award and Tanzania’s Sheria Ngowi who took home the African designer of the year trophy. The (ASFAs) 2017 were held on Friday at the Kampala Serena Hotel. The ASFAs is an African fashion award ceremony that celebrates and acknowledges fashion industry stakeholders including fashion designers, stylists, hair and makeup artists, media personalities and influencers from the African continent and beyond.
Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards 2017
This event is held annually in Uganda since its inaugural ceremony in 2013. The ASFAs is an evening of glitz and glamour and the biggest red carpet in Africa, in true celebration of fashion and style, with A-List guests from across the continent. Last year’s event organisers had already served notice of their intent to turn things up a notch higher by getting Tlale on board as the producer of the show. The outcome was a world-class display that wowed all and further enhanced the ASFAs’ reputation as the country’s most glamorous fashion event. Last year the event had a touch or royalty, with the Nnabagerekka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda gracing the event. The event was an evening of breath-taking design works and spellbinding musical performances. South African duo Mafikizolo, turned the heat up serving hit after hit, crowning the night with their latest release Love Potion that also bagged them the Most Stylish Video of The Year accolade. Nonetheless the awards still paid homage to local talent with performances from Ugandan artistes including Desire Luzinda, Nutty Neithan, Fik Fameica and Latinum, among others.
Last year’s event had winners in 34 different categories, up from the 25 last year. On a night dominated by performances by artistes on the catwalk and the mic, Brian Ahumuza, who launched the ASFAs in 2013, said ensuring fashion made business sense was the next step. “Last year theme, “African Fashion is the Future #FashionTakeover” sought to highlight the entrepreneurial success of the African fashion industry and hopefully translate into the business of fashion,” he said. “Today’s event is an important step in that direction”. Being the grandest fashion gathering, of course there were lots of fashionistas and celebrities strutting their stuff on the red carpet, but at the end of the day, it was all about recognizing the most stylish of all and that is exactly what happened (see below full list of winners on next page ).
