One more Met Gala to add to the collection today. With the theme “Garden of Time” and the title “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” celebrities, designers, and stylists alike occupied the Upper East Side for the 2024 Met Gala. The greatest red carpet trends (apart from lace, corsets, and leather) included birds, loads of florals, and tributes to John Galliano. Stylists combed into the archives to find looks inspired by gardens for their themes. The Loewe crew, which included Taylor Russell, Greta Lee, and Josh O’Connor, was astonished, while Tyla ruled the red carpet in Balmain. Zendaya debuted two looks. Loewe? It’s all explained here.

Who walked the red carpet at the 2024 Met Gala?
Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Zendaya appeared first as hosts. And thank God, Zendaya gave us two Met Gala moments when we really needed one! When Tyla arrived wearing a “sand” outfit, she essentially walked the red carpet. Ayo Edeberi, Lauren Sanchez, Taylor Russell, Omar Apollo, Mike Faist, Gracie Abrams, Nicholas Galitzine, Rachel Sennott, and Angel Reese were among the many notable first-timers in attendance. Additionally, Shou Chew, the CEO of TikTok, and Jonathan Anderson of Loewe were honorary chairs. Surprisingly, though, none of the major TikTokers made their red carpet appearance.

What was the theme again?
The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art chose a slightly less contentious option following last year’s tribute to Karl Lagerfeld. “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” an exhibition organized by the Costume Institute, focuses on forgotten and delicate clothing. Current pieces by designers Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney are on display, along with archival designs from fashion icons like Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Haut de Givenchy, to mention a few. Regarding the dress code (yes, they do differ), it focused on “The Garden of Time” and offered participants the option to play with the garden aspect or give a reference to the past with more vintage designs and artifacts.

Did Rihanna Show Up?
We lost out on Rihanna when she first announced she would be there, but a source later revealed to People that she is sick. Although disappointing, the event concluded on schedule.

The Top 10 Celebrities Who Rocked The Red Carpet’s Best Outfits At The 2023 Met Gala

This year’s theme, “In honor of Karl,” pays homage to the life and career of Karl Lagerfeld, the formidable and frequently contentious designer who transformed some of fashion’s most illustrious houses. In contrast to last year’s theme, which leaned into the opulence of the Gilded Era. When Lagerfeld passed away in 2019 at the age of 85, he was still in charge of Chanel and Fendi, where he headed design for more than 50 years, as well as his own namesake label.
During the decades he worked as a creative director, Lagerfeld became identified with Chanel.

Penélope Cruz, who made her Chanel runway debut shortly after Lagerfeld’s passing, Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, and Penélope Cruz are the co-chairs of this year’s event alongside Vogue’s global editorial director Anna Wintour.

The first Monday in May of 2023 was the date of the Met Gala. At the event honoring the late, great Karl Lagerfeld, celebrities paid homage to the designer in a variety of ways. Some wore vintage pieces created by the man himself, while others wore pieces inspired by his aesthetic as rival fashion houses reinterpreted some of his most well-known pieces.

There were many monochromatic outfits on the red carpet, with black and white dominating. We also saw numerous references to the camellia, loads of pearls, a hint of tweed, and hundreds upon thousands of crystal embellishments.

1.  Naomi Campbell in vintage Chanel
The night called for a little vintage Chanel, and Naomi Campbell, along with many other Nineties supermodels, gave Karl Lagerfeld a wink by going out in one of his designs. She selected a sophisticated, exquisite pink satin dress from Chanel’s spring/summer 2010 couture line with embellished accents.

2. Anok Yai in Prabal Gurung
One of the night’s best outfits came from Anok Yai and Prabal Gurung, who played with tulle, crystals, and the most beautiful silhouette. She accessorized her tiny dress with edgy sunglasses and silky opera gloves that reached her elbows.

3. Michaela Coel in Schiaparelli
Michaela Coel had a huge night because she was one of the hosts of the event. Because of this, she needed to look amazing on the red carpet, which she most surely did. For the occasion, the actress and director wore a Schiaparelli gown embellished with 130,000 crystals.

4. Rihanna in Valentino haute couture
Rihanna consistently ranks among the Met Gala attendees with the best outfits, and she did not let us down in 2023. The singer went for a stunning white haute couture ballgown by Valentino that came with a flowery headpiece that referred to the Camellia, the emblematic Chanel flower.

5. Lily Collins wearing Vera Wang
We also had the chance to witness how different designers interpreted Karl Lagerfeld’s creations, and we particularly liked Vera Wang’s interpretation. Actress Lily Collins donned a beautiful Karl Lagerfeld dress, which had a white bodice and a flowing black skirt with the word “Karl” embroidered on the train.

6. Nicole Kidman in vintage Chanel
The Met Gala is about more than simply looking amazing; it’s also about using your ensemble to tell a story, and Nicole Kidman may have had the best one of the evening.
The actress wore the same Chanel couture dress that she had debuted in 2004 for the renowned Baz Luhrmann-directed Chanel No. 5 fragrance commercial.

7. Camilla Morrone in Rodarte
On the Met Gala red carpet, there were many monochrome outfits, but one of our favorites was actress Camilla Morrone’s stunning Rodarte dress. The dress had a dramatic train and cape element, and it was constructed of white lace and black velvet. In a very Rodarte sense, it brilliantly nods to Lagerfeld’s aesthetic.

8. Anne Hathaway in Versace
It’s always wonderful to watch fashion houses show respect to one another, and this topic provided many examples. The outfit worn by Anne Hathaway, which was the ideal mash-up of Versace and Chanel, was one of our favorite interpretations of this.
The actress donned a floor-length, tweed gown with safety pins by Versace that was made in one color.

9. Lily Aldridge in Oscar de la Renta
Lily Aldridge consistently pulls off easy chic. Her 2023 Met Gala ensemble reflected exactly that, with Oscar de la Renta designers adding their own flair to Karl Lagerfeld’s creations. The pink train and eye-catching shoulder bows on the black gown stood out.

10. Allison Williams in Patou
Allison Williams chose to wear a Patou creation as a reference to some of Karl’s earlier moments.
She accessorized the dramatic and elegant bright orange satin dress with black opera gloves and a complementary hairband. It had a large bow on the shoulder and a statement belt.

The Story Behind Lupita Nyong’o’s Denim-Inspired Met Gala 2021 Beauty Look

Given that the springboard for Lupita Nyong’o’s 2021 Met Gala beauty was a Versace dress defined by a confluence of beaded detailing and denim panels, an above-neck approach equal parts pretty and irreverent seems a natural match. Fortunately, longtime conspirators Vernon François (hair) and Nick Barose (makeup) were more than up to the task, each ensuring that, in this case, an “American” moment meant a supremely creative one.

“Brooklyn-born conceptual artist Lorna Simpson inspired the look,” said François of Nyong’o’s molded mane, its transparent folds designed to echo the delicacy of tulle. “[Simpson’s] take on texture is powerful, and I wanted to imitate the effortless wave and movement that she conveys in her work.”

François relied on hairpieces, ample pins, and a spritz of Redken’s Triple Pure 32 for maximum hold, along with an ardent communication of contrast, artistic freedom, and history. “Lupita is incredibly visionary and adventurous, not only does she have the most versatile kinky, coily, hair but the ability to wear and show the beauty of all hair textures,” he says. “I’ve always wanted to bring this technique to life within the Afro hair experience, and doing it for the Met Gala is mind-blowing.”

And while the striking hair may have matched the sculptural nature of the actor’s Versace dress, Barose’s makeup took its cues from its blue hue. The makeup artist used ten different shades of blue shadows pulled from two separate Lancôme Hypnôse 5-Color Eyeshadow Palettes, Bleu Hypnotique, and the soon-to-release Drama Denim with bright accents here and there for even more dimension. A rim of black eyeliner and brickish lipstick completed the look. The trick is the ’90s one, in step with Barose’s overarching inspiration.

“We’ve been exchanging images of the denim dress, which is kind of my heyday,” explained Barose. “I was so inspired by the supermodels of the ’90s and Versace, so it’s something that’s second nature to me. But we didn’t want to do anything too on the nose. It’s a different spin.” The makeup artist also cites Old Hollywood and Western films as references, the shared characteristic of all genres that of a femme fatale a woman who is strong, powerful, glamorous, and fierce. “Mostly fierce,” said Barose. “That word is thrown around a lot, but a Versace moment is always fierce.”

Met Gala 2021 The Best Dressed on the Red Carpet

Last night saw the long-awaited return of the Met Gala, an event that is often dubbed ‘the Oscars of fashion, and which always sees celebrities and designers pull out all the stops to create truly memorable red-carpet moments. After 18 months of cancelled events as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, last night’s gala was even more special than usual as the biggest supermodels, actresses, sports stars and influencers made their way up those very famous steps for the first time in a while.

This year’s exhibition, and therefore the accompanying theme, was ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ or ‘American Independence’ which celebrates the Costume Institute’s 75th anniversary and explores a modern vocabulary of American fashion. When it came to the gala outfits, we saw both obvious and subtle nods to American fashion, culture, and history, while plenty of American designers were represented at the event.

It was a truly exciting night for fashion and there were plenty of memorable red-carpet moments.

One of America’s greatest exports is the image of the rugged cowboy, so it’s honestly surprising that the beige carpet at the Met Gala 2021 wasn’t full of spurs, wide-brimmed hats, and sturdy boots. Despite that, plenty of stars lived up to the “In America” theme by embracing Western wear in some way. From Leon Bridges who went traditional in a fringed Bode jacket to Jennifer Lopez who channeled a couture adventurer in an earthy brown Ralph Lauren gown, the looks that embraced the West were also the ones that felt riskiest and most alive.

Ben Platt, in Christian Cowan and Lupita N’yongo, in Versace, both embraced denim, while Shawn Mendes opted for a shirtless look in leather pants by Michael Kors. Kacey Musgraves was more abstract in an equestrian-inspired high-waisted skirt and boots by Ralph Lauren, while Kim Petras honored her childhood as a horse girl by wearing a spectacular printed Collina Strada gown complete with a horse’s head hanging from her neck.

Iman in Harris Reed

It takes a lot to steal attention on the Met Gala red carpet, but Iman managed to do exactly this in a striking look by Harris Reed. The model wore a completely handmade crinoline and gold leaf gown, jacquard bustier, and flares, with an enormous statement hat which Reed created in collaboration with Vivienne Lake. The stylist described the moment as their “biggest dream come true to date”.

Zoe Kravitz in Saint Laurent

Post-pandemic, naked dressing is definitely back on the menu. This was proven by a number of stars last night, including Zoë Kravitz, who looked absolutely breathtaking in a completely sheer, beaded Saint Laurent gown, with sparkling Jessica McCormack diamonds.

Model Paloma Elesser was the picture of old Hollywood glamour in a deep red satin gown by American designer Zac Posen, which featured a dramatic feathered train.

Supermodel Kendall Jenner is no stranger to the Met Gala, and she is also no stranger to a sheer dress, but last night’s custom Givenchy ensemble may have been her best effort to date. The gown – which was embellished with crystals and featured a fishtail train and a jewelled neckpiece – was inspired by the house’s most famous muse, Audrey Hepburn, and a dress she wore in My Fair Lady.

It was a big night for Balenciaga with the house responsible for dressing some of the biggest stars in the world. This included Rihanna, always the queen of the Met Gala red carpet, who this year wore a black voluminous gown and beanie from the house’s latest couture collection, which she paired with lots and lots of Bulgari diamonds.

Gemma Chan in Prabal Gurung

British actress Gemma Chan pulled out all the stops with her embellished Prabal Gurung mini dress, which featured a dramatic mint-green train. The dress was a tribute to Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American film star of Hollywood’s golden era. “A trailblazer, fashion icon, and woman ahead of her time – she paved the way for those who came after and continues to inspire,” Chan wrote.

Michaela Coel in Balenciaga

It was Michaela Coel’s first time at the Met Gala, and she certainly did not disappoint. The actress, writer, and director arrived in a full Balenciaga look, where she was covered in sequins. The jumpsuit was made in a bright electric blue colour, which was presumably a nod to the American flag.

Kaia Gerber in Oscar de la Renta

Another star that nodded to old Hollywood glamour was Kaia Gerber who looked timeless and beautiful in a strapless black ball gown by Oscar de la Renta. The custom black faille gown featured ivy vines, which were made of black thread-work embroidery and lined the top of the corset bodice.

Normani had a picture-perfect moment in a Valentino couture gown for the 2021 Met Gala. The dress featured an enormous skirt, a dramatic train, and huge sleeves, all of which made for big, head-turning fashion, which is what this event is all about.

Everything We Know About the 2021 Met Gala

The 2021 Met Gala is tonight, September 13th, with live red carpet coverage starting at 5:30 p.m. EST. Typically held annually on the first Monday in May, the Met Gala aka fashion’s biggest night of the year returns this year as a smaller, more intimate affair than in years past.

(The soirée was canceled last year, and postponed to this September, due to COVID-19.) While it may look a little different this year, there will still be a red carpet filled with fabulous fashions and celebrity sightings.

So, ahead of the big bash, here are all the details we know about the event thus far including what the theme is, who’s hosting it, what the Costume Institute exhibit will entail, and what we can expect to see on the step and repeat.

What is the Met Gala?

The Met Ball, or Met Gala, is the fashion world equivalent of the Oscars. It’s an evening when designers, models, and Hollywood stars convene in the year’s most over-the-top looks to celebrate and fundraise at a new exhibit from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Typically, everyone dresses to the theme, and according to the feel, of the exhibit; past themes have included camp, religion, punk, and more.

When and where is it?

The 2021 Met gala will be held as an intimate gala on September 13, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

What’s this year’s theme?

The 2021 Met gala is focused on celebrating all things American fashion. Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, felt it was time to reexamine American identity and fashion, especially as it has changed over the last several years due to both political and social justice movements.

“I’ve been really impressed by American designers’ responses to the social and political climate, particularly around issues of body inclusivity and gender fluidity, and I’m just finding their work very, very self-reflective,” he told Vogue.

“I really do believe that American fashion is undergoing a renaissance. I think young designers, in particular, are at the vanguard of discussions about diversity and inclusion, as well as sustainability and transparency, much more so than their European counterparts, maybe with the exception of the English designers.”

What will the exhibit look like?

The Costume Institute will actually present a two-part 2021 exhibit, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.”

Part one of the exhibition, “A Lexicon of Fashion,” will open on September 18 at the Anna Wintour Costume Center at the Met, marking the Costume Institute’s 75th anniversary. The exhibit will be organized to resemble a home, with intersecting walls and rooms that will establish what Bolton calls “a new vocabulary that’s more relevant and more reflective of the times in which we’re living.” Pieces from Christopher John Rogers, Sterling Ruby, Conner Ives, Prabal Gurung, and Andre Walker will be featured in part one of the exhibition.

Part two, “An Anthology of Fashion,” will open on May 5, 2022, in the period rooms of the museum’s American Wing. Bolton and the museum’s curatorial team will work with American film directors to create cinematic scenes within each room that depict a different history of American fashion. (A second Met gala will also take place on May 2, 2022, to mark the opening of “An Anthology of Fashion.”)

Every year, the Met Gala has a number of cochairs who help host the event. For the 2021 Met gala, Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka will co-chair the affair, while Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour will serve as the honorary chairs.

Are there Covid safety protocols in place?

The health and safety of guests and staff are a top priority. All attendees must provide proof of full vaccination, provide a negative rapid PCR test the day before, and wear proper face coverings when indoors except when eating or drinking.

It’s official, there will be no Met Gala this year 2020

It’s now official: There will be no Met gala in 2020. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which has been closed since mid March, announced today that the Met gala, often called the party of the year, has been canceled for 2020.

In a statement issued this afternoon, the museum said that the gala had been canceled “due to the global health crisis.

In a statement to Vogue, the Met said fashion’s big night has officially been called off “due to the global health crisis.” The Met Gala typically happens on the first Monday in May.

The Met gala, typically held on the first Monday in May, is both the most star-studded social event of the spring and a critical fundraiser for the Costume Institute, acting as the main source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and capital improvements. Last year, the gala for the exhibition “Camp: Notes on Fashion” raised a reported $15 million.

This year’s exhibition at the Costume Institute, “About Time: Fashion and Duration,” will trace a century and a half of fashion from 1870 to the present on the occasion of the Met’s 150th anniversary. It is scheduled to open on October 29 and run through February 7, 2021. The majority of objects in the show will be drawn from the Costume Institute’s collection, including major gifts from designers as part of the Met’s 2020 Collections Initiative.

In addition to today’s announcement about the Met gala, the museum updated its status on its planned reopening, saying it would now take place in mid August “or perhaps a few weeks later.”

Daniel H. Weiss, president of the museum, said: “The Met has endured much in its 150 years and today continues as a beacon of hope for the future.

This museum is also a profound reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of art to offer comfort, inspiration, and community. As we endure these challenging and uncertain times, we are encouraged by looking forward to the day when we can once again welcome all to enjoy the Met’s collection and exhibitions.”

The days and hours that the Met will be open to the public will likely be reduced at first. And to maintain social distancing requirements, the museum will not have tours, talks, concerts, or events through calendar year 2020. The museum said it expects to resume these activities in 2021, “including a belated celebration of its 150th anniversary.”

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit, where celebrities dress up in extravagant outfits to have dinner at the Met but do not burglarize it, is tonight. Known colloquially as the Met Gala, it’s like an awards show without the awards — pure, unadulterated red carpet. This year, the theme is camp. It’s a slippery thing to define! The dress code: “studied triviality.” Expect the unexpected.

  • The first unexpected thing was the number of outfits Lady Gaga wore on the red carpet. (Four.)
  • The second was Billy Porter, the “Pose” actor, wearing a golden bodysuit and wings in a tribute to one of the looks from the 1975 Diana Ross film “Mahogany.” (The film was suggested as inspiration by Ryan Murphy, who suggested that Mr. Porter, too, wear multiple looks. But the actor didn’t “want to work that hard.”)
  • Mr. Murphy himself wore a 100-pound outfit inspired by Liberace. “Once you’re strapped in there’s no getting out of it,” he said. “But it’s really, really fun.”
  • Celine Dion showed up to exhibit the joy of living!

History Of Met Gala

Officially, it’s the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit, a black-tie extravaganza held the first Monday in May to raise money for the Costume Institute (a.k.a. the fashion department).

Unofficially, the night’s festivities have been called many things, including “the party of the year,” “the Oscars of the East Coast” (mostly because of the star quotient and the elaborate red carpet, where guests pose on the grand entrance stairs to the museum) and, somewhat pointedly, “an A.T.M. for the Met,” the last by the publicist Paul Wilmot.

The party signals the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual blockbuster show, and it is known for its celebrity and fashion hosts. This year the exhibition is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” and the hosts are Anna Wintour (the magical manipulative Wizard of Oz for this particular event), Rihanna (who has a starring role in the coming Met Gala heist movie, “Ocean’s 8”), Donatella Versace (because her brother Gianni had a thing about Catholic iconography) and Amal Clooney (because … well, who doesn’t want to stand in a receiving line with Amal Clooney?).

Stephen A. Schwarzman, a founder of Blackstone, and his wife, Christine, are honorary chairs. They are the first people to name-sponsor a fashion exhibition since 1997. That’s a big deal. It’s also big money.

How Much Does the Met Gala Cost?

Tickets this year are $30,000 apiece, and tables are about $275,000. The party and exhibition are sponsored. All of the money from ticket sales goes to the Costume Institute, which it needs because it is the only one of the Met’s curatorial departments that has to fund itself, fashion having been an iffy proposition as an art form when the Costume Institute was established.
Last year, just over $12 million was raised. Of course, not everyone pays for a ticket. A brand will often invite celebrities to sit at its table, and Ms. Wintour also often invites up-and-coming designers who may not be able to afford a ticket and scatters them around the event. This makes them really excited and makes them feel like they owe her. If they didn’t already.

Why Would Anyone Pay That Much for a Party?
Ms. Wintour, the editor of American Vogue and the artistic director of Condé Nast, first became chairwoman in 1995. She took over annual leadership in 1999. Since then, she has been instrumental in transforming a local philanthropic event into the ultimate global celebrity/power cocktail: Take a jigger of famous names from fashion, add film, politics and business, and mix.

It has become the gold standard of parties; that by which other benefits are measured. It’s such a heady combo that President Trump proposed to his wife, Melania, during the gala in 2004. (In case you are wondering: No, they are not expected this year.). It is among the hardest party tickets of the year to get — and thus, intensely coveted.

Best Dress celebrites at the met gala 2018 Considering the dress code of the 2018 Met Gala was “Sunday best,” celebrating a Catholicism-themed exhibit, Monday night’s celebrity-packed red carpet could’ve gone wrong in a million ways.
Yet, for all the sacrilegious naked dresses or culturally inappropriate couture that the event’s A-list attendees could’ve worn to the event, the majority of this year’s Met Gala looks hit the mark, making for a revelatory night of saintly fashion.
From Lena Waithe’s instantly-iconic LGBTQ flag cape to the many angels, popes and renaissance artworks that walked the carpet, these were the best fashions of the 2018 Met Gala.

Rihanna
Rih has always been a Met Gala show-stopper, and considering Anna Wintour tapped her as one of the celebrity hosts of this year’s event, her look was bound to be a success. And it was, with the singer opting for a Margiela-designed papal crown and cape.

Lena Waithe
With a suit and cape by Carolina Herrera, Waithe re-imagined the night’s theme as a way to celebrate a community that hasn’t historically been recognized by the church, a fashion choice both cheekily transgressive and triumphant. Plus, it was a look that Vogue icon and cape enthusiast André Leon Talley had to love.
