Work With Smile Leads To Success: An Exclusive Beauty Business Interview With Sina Tsegazeab Founder Of Natna Natural Hair

The renowned and high-quality hair distribution company Natna Hair, with headquarters in Uganda, recently debuted its newest item as part of the launch of its new collection.
The brand has been on the fast track to success, even releasing products not just for women but for men, in a time when appearance and self-care are the norms.
A couple of the products that the company’s catalog highlights are hair extensions for balding men and beard extensions.

We had an exclusive opportunity to speak with the company’s executive Sina Tsegazeab, who explains to us what this new collection means to their customers and why self-care and beauty are no longer a luxury but rather a way of life.

Ann Mumbi: What is Natna Natural Hair all about?

Sina Tsegazeab: Natna hair is a brand that deals with carefully selected human hair weaves, wigs, lace wigs, ponytails, closures, lashes, and so on.
All our products are made from 100% human hair that has no plastic, fiber or synthetic added.
You’re able to wash, dye, color, set, and do everything with them.

AM: When and how did you get into the hair and beauty industry?

ST: I started working in the cosmetics industry in 2013. It’s funny how I got into the business.

To cut a long tale short, buyers began to complain that the items weren’t up to par and were of poor quality after receiving a sizable purchase.
They were going through a terrible period, so they started seeking someone to give them advice.

As they were doing this, they remembered me, so I joined to offer assistance.

Because I used to plait weaves frequently, I had some knowledge.

They later found the business to be tough to manage, so they offered me an opportunity if I could take over.
I took over, changed the brand, and now I’m here.

AM: What were you doing before you decided to set up Natna Hair?

ST: I was a student at Cavendish University studying online marketing prior to starting the company.

AM: What was the catalyst in your journey?

ST: I constantly strive to be at the top of my game.

AM: How would you describe your signature look?

ST: decent, corporate office appearance.

AM: How important are the ingredients in hair care products?

ST: In brief, it’s like food, and nutritious food is necessary for our bodies, and the same is true of hair and hair products.
The components in hair care products are more significant than you can possibly understand.

AM: What’s a hair care secret that you wish more people knew?

ST: Using natural treatments prior to washing your hair and being aware of your hair type’s requirements.

AM: How important do you think it is for people to have a regular hair care regimen?

ST: Most individuals overlook the fact that taking care of one’s hair should be part of a routine, much like taking care of one’s skin or exercising.

AM: A client comes in and asks for a style that you do not think will suit their face.
How do you respond?

ST: So, in situations like that, the first thing I do is tell them why that wouldn’t be ideal for them. Most of the time, they comprehend and are willing to attempt what I advise. If not, I value their viewpoint.

AM: What treatment methods would you recommend if a client came in with hair damaged from excessive dye?

SM: They should first take a break from dyeing their hair for a while before deep conditioning it.

AM: What credentials and licenses do you have in fields related to hair styling?

SM: I am a qualified hair technologist (not a hairstylist), and I am familiar with all the procedures involved in producing and gathering human hair from donors, as well as the industrial process, how to distinguish between different hair grades, which origins are best for various styles, etc.
An expert in this process is referred to as a hair technician. I learned how to style, make wigs, and ventilate hair on my own.

AM: How do you try to stay up-to-date on current hairdressing trends?

SM: This is simple for me because I now understand how to start a trend rather than just follow one.

AM: Have you ever experienced a situation where a client wasn’t happy with the finished look?
If so, how did you handle a case?

SM: I am not a hair stylist, so I can’t really point anything out.

AM: Why should anyone use your service or product?

SM: That’s a really lovely question.
One is that customers will receive excellent value for their money, long-lasting products that will help them preserve their appearance, and the greatest possible customer service.

AM: You started working in the hair and beauty industry several years ago, how has the industry changed since you began?

SM: It has undergone numerous changes.
People can distinguish between the many hair types and whether or not it is human hair, which makes our job simple.

AM: Any plans to come up with a new product line?

SM: Oh yes, it’s 80% done, and we are going to launch it very soon.

AM: What is your brand philosophy?

SM: To constantly offer high-quality hair and products at reasonable costs, together with customer service that makes each engagement with our brand satisfying for our customers.

AM: What are the 5 most popular beauty products you use?

SM:

  1. Neutrogena scrub
  2. Dove hair conditioner
  3. MAC foundation studio fix
  4. Bio-oil
  5. Olay sunscreen

AM: How long have you been in the Hairline business?

SM: My brand is currently 7 years old, having started in 2015.

AM: What are your 5 beauty do’s and don’ts?

SM:

The beauty do’s for me are:

  1. Moisturizing
  2. Deep conditioning
  3. Exercising
  4. Steaming
  5. Scrubbing

The don’ts on the other hand are:

  1. Bleaching
  2. Using cheap products
  3. Having heavy makeup on daily

AM: Does everyone look better with weaved hair or wigs?

SM: Everyone can look good wearing weaves, for sure. The same cannot be said for wigs, though.

AM: If you turn up at a show/shoot and the model has terrible hair, what do you do?

SM: Well, this can’t happen because for photo shoots and shows we come knowing what to do and the model also comes knowing that she has to come in a specific style.

AM: Beauty Instagram profiles have become a major influence on the hair and beauty industry, but you keep yours quite personal, how important social platforms are for you?

SM: Yes, you’re correct that Instagram influencers are growing in popularity, but I chose to promote my brand on my own instead because it seemed more logical to do so.

AM: Where our readers can find you and keep in touch with you? (Provide your Instagram, website, and Facebook page if any please)

SM: You can follow us across all platforms @Natnahair.

African-American Youth Runway Model Inspires as a Natural Hair Advocate

She’s not even a teenager and she’s already walked the runways at New York and LA Fashion Week. Twelve-year-old model Celai (Seh-lay) West continues to inspire.

This time, with a special honor to her ancestry.

Celai lives in Sacramento but is known on the SoCal fashion scene after walking in shows in Los Angeles. The first time she wore heels was when she was ten years old and walking in the Style fashion show in Palm Springs Fashion Week

At 10 years old, Celai perfected that walk on the runway. She’d been invited to hit the catwalk in New York for designer David Tupaz after being “discovered” as a model as a child.

It’s not only that mature-beyond-her-years strut that makes her a stand-out it’s her signature hair. The African-American model is an advocate for natural black hairstyles.

She calls herself a “texture activist.” She said she’d be on set and the stylist didn’t know how to do her hair.

On her social media page, you’ll find hair tutorials. She’s an advocate for natural black hair.

At seven years old, she started an empowerment t-shirt line called The Chatty Chick. A signature t-shirt reads “I’d be jealous of my hair too.”

Celai West has appeared on ten magazine covers, published inside several magazine issues and newspapers and many of her images as well as videos have been shared on social media in viral numbers. She currently has two viral runway videos that to date, have been viewed more than 17 million times collectively. She can regularly be seen walking the runway among an all adult line-up as well as her coaching runway techniques.

For Black History Month, Celai did a modeling photoshoot in honor of her great-great-great-grandmother Maddie Ligans, who passed away in the 1930s. Along with the black-and-white photo with her dress in lace, she titled her copy “Dear Ancestors” and wrote, “I will make you proud.”

Although the coronavirus numbers are now easing Southern California into the less-restrictive red tier, fashion shows that would normally be held in March are still a no-go. If pandemic numbers hold, expect the fashion world on both coasts to go big in September and October for Fall Fashion Week.

Eva Marcille Defends Her Traditional African Hairstyle That Critics Slammed Her For Wearing To Cynthia Bailey’s Wedding

Eva Marcille is a beauty who isn’t afraid to experiment whether it comes to fashion or hairstyling. After she wore a unique hairstyle to Cynthia Bailey‘s wedding, she has a message for close-minded critics.

Eva appeared in a beautiful white dress that hugged every curve of her body along with gold jewelry and an embellished towering hair bun.

Many people slammed her for the style itself and the fact that she would wear it as a bridesmaid to another person’s nuptials.

‘For a runway…absolutely. For someone else’s wedding…absolutely not,’ commented one.

‘Alllllllllll the loctitians in Atl… & this is what we come up with…,’ said another.

This person commented: ‘Eva could’ve pulled it back not sticking straight up like she was going to Whooville!!!!!’

There were people who came to her defense.

One person wrote: ‘People who keep talking about not liking her hair don’t know fashion. @evamarcille I LOVE YOUR HAIR style that way! It speaks to your personality and style and it looks bomb! This type of style is not for the faint of hearts. It’s for the out the box, eccentric and free spirited types.

And if @cynthiabailey felt some way about it, best believe a woman on her wedding day would have no hesitation saying so, lol. And you guys sound crazy asking her why she styled her hair that way. Obviously, it’s because she liked it that way. Girrrrl, don’t pay these basics no mind.’

Issa Rae Is Now the Co-Owner and Face of Sienna Naturals

To re-launch a brand with bigger and better products is one thing. But to return to the game with improved offerings and a big celebrity name is a feat very few beauty brands can brag about, especially when the said celebrity is none other than Issa Rae.

HBO’s hit show Insecure is known for its beautiful display of natural hairstyles thanks to creator and star Issa Rae. This week, the filmmaker announced she is now the co-owner and face of Sienna Naturals, a brand of natural hair care brand with clean ingredients.

Rae will join the team with founder and CEO Hannah Diop to work on expanding the collection and its customer base.

“I’ve known Hannah for a long time, and I got to see the brand evolve from her home. It’s expanded so much beyond that. The care and the research that has gone into this natural, safe, healthy brand, I knew that I wanted to be involved,” Rae said in a statement according to The Cut.

“We get coerced into manipulating our hair into styles not right for us or using damaging products,” Rae continued. “I have an opportunity to make hair care digestible via my sense of humor, my openness to my own hair struggle journey.”

Diop says she was happy to work with Rae and praised how she used Insecure to showcase the versatile beauty of Black hair.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B7m6W5DAknr/?utm_source=ig_embed

“Sienna Naturals is not a company that is telling you how to wear your hair,” said Diop. “We believe in empowering our customers to be who they really are and have a product that supports them.”

Customers can add themselves to the waiting list to learn when the products will become available.

Effective Ways To Get Smooth Natural and Long Hair

While you battle tangles and try to tame the frizz, regular brushing and using a billion different leave-in serums don’t always seem to do the trick. Having smooth hair may start to seem likely only in dreams. However, achieving smooth hair without tangles or frizz is not impossible. In this article, we have listed the different ways to smoothen hair.

Ways To Smoothen Hair

There are two ways you can smoothen your hair: chemical smoothing and regular hair styling.

  • Chemical Smoothing: This method uses chemicals like formaldehyde, alkalines, etc. to treat your hair. It is a permanent treatment that lasts for at least 12-15 weeks. You will have to get it redone every few months to keep your hair looking smooth.
  • Natural Smoothing: This method uses regular hairstyling tips to smooth your hair. It is temporary but very efficient. It does not heavily change the structure of hair, as chemical smoothing does. With the right care and management, you can achieve smooth and healthy hair.
  • While these methods are temporary, natural smoothing is likely to improve the health of your hair, in the long run, making it smooth and shiny. Read on to know more about these two smoothing methods and decide which one would be the ideal choice for you.

How To Get Smooth Hair Naturally

  1. Rinse With Cold Water

Rinsing your hair with cold water removes any frizz and makes the hair straight. After you wash and condition your hair, rinse with cold water a few times. Pat dry your hair instead of drying it vigorously or scrunching it. You can also use a straightening or anti-frizz conditioner before rinsing your hair. The cold water will lock in the anti-frizz action of the conditioner and keep your hair smooth.

  2. Banana Pack

Banana is rich in carbohydrates, vitamins, natural oils, and potassium. It has antioxidant potential that helps fight free radicals . Using banana in a hair pack will make your hair feel nourished and moisturized. It reduces frizz and soothes an irritated scalp with regular use. The benefits of banana can be enhanced by adding yogurt to it, which is also an excellent hair moisturizer.

    You Will Need

    • 1 ripe banana
    • 2 teaspoons yogurt

    Procedure

    1. Mash a ripe banana and add two teaspoons of yogurt to it.
    2. Blend it to get a smooth paste so that no chunks of the banana remain.
    3. Apply this all over the hair, starting from the tips and work up until the crown.
    4. Rinse off after 45 minutes with a shampoo
  3. Vinegar Rinse

Apple cider vinegar has been in use as a natural hair rinse for a long time now. Our hair has a pH of 5.5, but the shampoos and conditioners we use are strongly alkaline.

Although there is no scientific evidence, anecdotal evidence suggests that apple cider vinegar helps maintain the pH balance of our scalp while cleaning the build-up that might have formed from the excessive use of products. Rinsing your hair with the vinegar will close the cuticles of your hair and make it smoother, softer, and shinier.

    You Will Need

    • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
    • 1 cup water

    Procedure

    1. Dilute apple cider vinegar with water.
    2. Use this as the final rinse after washing your hair and leave it on.
  4. Hot Oil Treatment

A hot oil massage once a week will not only give you healthy and smooth hair, but it will also help you de-stress. Use oils, such as coconut, olive, sweet almond, jojoba, castor, lavender, rosemary, and thyme, to massage your hair. You can also use the combination of these oils for better results.

    You Will Need

    • 2-3 tablespoons of oil, depending on the length of your hair

    Procedure

    1. Massage your scalp with the oil and apply it to all of your hair.
    2. After massaging your scalp, wrap your head with a warm towel. This creates an environment that allows for maximum penetration of the oil.
    3. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash off the oil with shampoo.
  5. Use A Shampoo For Your Hair Type

A shampoo cleanses your scalp and also makes your hair smooth and soft. However, you should always use a shampoo that is suited to your hair.

The best shampoos for smooth hair that are available in the Indian market are:

    • Herbal Essences bio:renew Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo

Argan oil is a new, widely used component in hair care. Argan Oil of Morocco shampoo contains natural Moroccan argan oil, which penetrates the hair roots to soften them. It also repairs damaged strands and strengthens hair. It does not contain chemicals, such as sulfates and parabens, and is safe to be used on colored hair. It is especially effective in preventing damage from styling heat and UV exposure. By restoring moisture, it makes the hair soft, silky, and shiny. The antioxidants and vitamin E present in argan oil improve the texture by nourishing the hair.

    Head & Shoulders 2-in-1 Smooth & Silky Anti-dandruff Shampoo+Conditioner

Head & Shoulders 2-in-1 Smooth and Silky Anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner is shampoo and conditioner combined into one bottle with anti-dandruff properties. It removes frizz and restores moisture in the hair, making it smoother. The main ingredient in the product, pyrithione zinc, is an active antifungal agent. The results are, therefore, dandruff-free scalp and hair and frizz control. It is suitable for all hair types.

Another safe idea to cleanse your hair is to use natural ingredients.

    1. Make your own natural shampoo by boiling dried Indian gooseberry (amla), shikakai, and reetha.
    2. Let it boil until you get a soapy solution.
    3. Use this to wash your hair at least twice a week to get shiny and smooth hair.
  6. Careful Combing

Go easy on the brushing. Combing or brushing your hair too much will cause friction, which will make your hair frizzy. Restrict combing your hair to a bare minimum, and never do it when your hair is wet. Wet hair is more prone to breakage. A good combing schedule involves detangling your hair before a shower with a wide-toothed wooden comb and then combing it once or twice a day to style and get rid of tangles.

  7. Proper Conditioning

The right conditioning treatment can work wonders for your hair and make it smooth and silky. Make it a point to deep condition your hair at least once a week. Leaving a little conditioner behind on your hair can make it appear smooth. This is completely harmless as long as the conditioner is not in contact with your scalp.

You can also use leave-in conditioners and serums, which are very useful to achieve that smooth and frizz-free look. Leave-in conditioners are especially beneficial for people with curly hair.

  8. Take A Break From Heat

Straighteners, curling irons, and blow dryers may be the best solution for instant styling to make your hair appear smooth. But the regular use of these hot styling tools is extremely harmful for your hair. The heat from these tools damages your hair, making it coarse and frizzy and stripping off its natural sheen.

However, if there are days when you cannot do without styling, remember to use a heat-protecting spray or serum. It will help reduce the damage from the heat by forming a protective shield around your hair.

  9. Blow Drying Techniques

Always try to dry your hair naturally. But if you are in a hurry, you can blow dry your hair. However, make it a point to use a good quality big-toothed round brush with a ceramic base. Use the cool settings of your blow dryer as this leads to less damage. Hold the blow dryer 15 cm away from your hair and move it constantly so that it doesn’t blow at one section of hair for too long.

  10. Say No To Chemicals

Do not use products that contain sodium lauryl sulfate or ammonium laureth sulfate, as both of them are industrial cleansers and very harsh on your hair. These are ingredients that most shampoos contain. Research has shown that these chemicals cause heavy hair fall and thinning of hair (1). Instead of sulfate shampoos, use shampoos with natural and organic ingredients, which are not harsh on your hair. They lock in the moisture, thus giving you smooth and soft hair.

  11. Trimming Is Important

Trimming is the most important thing to do if you want to maintain hair that is healthy and smooth. It helps remove split ends and damage that would otherwise spread up the hair shaft, causing frizz and dryness. Trim your hair every four to six weeks.

  12. Mayonnaise Mask

Treat your hair by giving it a deep conditioning treatment once a week. Mayonnaise is a rich source of L-cysteine, which is an amino acid and a powerful antioxidant, which is also found in eggs. Using this hair pack regularly stimulates healthy hair growth.

    You Will Need

    • 1 cup mayonnaise
    • 2 teaspoons mashed avocado

    Procedure

    1. Mix the mayonnaise and avocado until the mixture becomes fluffy.
    2. Apply the mixture to your hair from the roots through the length of your hair.
    3. Pull your hair to the crown and cover your head with a shower cap.
    4. Keep it on for an hour and rinse off with shampoo.

You can also smoothen your hair with chemicals. However, this method is expensive and can have damaging side effects on your hair. If you want to smoothen your hair chemically, ensure that your hair is healthy and not over-processed. It is always a good idea to consult a stylist before you get a treatment done. Pre and post care is crucial for healthy, smoothened hair.

    Chemical Smoothing Hair Tips

  13. Traditional Relaxers

Relaxers are used to soften and calm the natural texture of the hair. They are suitable for people with wavy or slightly curly hair. However, they do not work well with extremely curly hair. Relaxers fix frizzy textures and smoothen the hair shafts. The effect loses out once the chemicals fade out in four to six months.

  14. Chemical Smoothing

This technique uses a lot of chemicals to break the natural bonds of your hair. The hair is then washed with a smoothing solution and straightened. This procedure takes four to five hours, and the effects last for about three months. Regular touch-ups are required to maintain the smooth and straight look of your hair. It is not meant for colored hair.

  15. Thermal Reconditioning

Also known as Japanese straightening, this technique is suitable for bulky, loose to medium curls, but not for very tight curls. The hair is repeatedly washed with a chemical solution, which helps break the inner bonds. Then, each strand is reshaped. Finally, the neutralizer is applied to achieve a smooth, silky, and straight look. This technique permanently changes the structure of your hair, and regular touch-ups are required every five to six months, depending on the growth rate of your hair. It is not suitable for colored or processed hair. Here is a detailed post on Japanese straightening.

  16. Brazilian Keratin Treatment

This technique has widely gained popularity due to the use of keratin, which is less harsh on hair. It smoothes the surface of the hair but does not permanently break the bonds. This treatment controls frizz by maintaining the volume and texture of the hair. It is safe for colored hair and is suitable for all hair types from waves to tight curls. Here is a detailed post on Brazilian Keratin treatment.

As discussed earlier, chemical treatments come with certain risks and side effects.

    Risks And Side Effects

When using chemical treatments to smooth your hair, make sure they don’t contain formaldehyde. It can burn the scalp and eyes. Some products claim to have unactivated formaldehyde, which might be activated by the other chemicals in the product. When using regular straighteners, make sure you use keratin straighteners as they do less damage to the hair.
Follow these natural methods or choose any chemical treatments to get smoother and shinier hair.

Leila Noelliste Beauty Blogger from Brooklyn New York

Leila Noelliste has innovated in the beauty space for more than a decade. Her award winning hair and beauty site, Black Girl with Long Hair www.blackgirllonghair.com, became top-ranked for women and beauty, receiving more than 5 million page views monthly before closing in February 2018.

She followed this with the creation of BGLH Marketplace, a whipped shea, cocoa and mango butter boutique that operates online and out of a storefront in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. The beauty startup currently generates $300,000 in annual revenue from a 14,000-person customer base, and is projected to generate $400,000 in revenue in 2019.

After launching Black Girl with Long Hair, a top‐ranked natural hair and beauty site, she noticed two things: that shea, mango and cocoa butter are miracle ingredients with an endless list of health and beauty benefits for hair and skin, and that her readers had repeated complaints about lack of consistent access to them.

Black girl with long hair products collection

In November 2014 she launched BGLH Marketplace and began selling raw shea butter from her blog, mostly to her readers.

In January 2015 she got the idea to evolve her store into an ‘ice cream shop for the body’, where customers could pick from a variety of all‐natural whipped and scented mango, shea and cocoa butters to incorporate into their skin and hair routine. Her goal was to make the butters as fragrant, rich and absorbent as possible.

Studying pastry techniques, she learned how to use commercial grade mixers to whip the butters to a soft and fluffy consistency that sinks right into hair and skin.

Noelliste now whips about one metric ton of shea, mango and cocoa butter a year with the help of two assistants.
