How to Dress for Cocktail (Attire For Women – Dos And Don’ts)

What started as ‘the attire’ for the elite is now a must-have prized possession in every woman’s wardrobe. Cocktail dresses were tailormade for fancy events in the early 19th century. And, just like everything else, cocktail dresses are not just confined to just the most expensive closets anymore. It bridged a huge gap and answered a lot of questions on what to wear for weddings, engagement parties, reunions, etc. during the day or less formal yet prim clothing for evening parties.

Thanks to the novelty of talented designers, your options are only endless. You can hover around carefully and pull-off dresses that might not be a textbook definition of a cocktail dress. However, for that, you need first to understand the rules and rituals before you break them. And, that’s what this article is going to help you with. A guide to women’s cocktail dressing, and most importantly the Dos And Don’ts of it.

What Is Cocktail Attire?
Simply put, cocktail attire is nothing but formal clothing but far more celebratory. It is casual than your office wear and tad bit formal than your regular casual attire. More often than not, if you are expected to show up in cocktail attire, the invitation will say so. If it does not, then you need to understand that events like anniversaries, reunions, engagements, weddings, etc. are all your typical occasions for cocktail attires.
What Is A Cocktail Attire For Women
A general rule of thumb for a cocktail dress is that it cannot be skimpy, transparent, too short or too long. Basically, the stuff that falls in between the formal and casual spectrum. Anything from a classic little black dress (LBD) to an A-line, strapless, embellished, lace or long sleeves midi dresses are your safe bets. We will discuss more on this in a bit.

Thank you For The Rain Film

Five years ago Kisilu, a Kenyan farmer, started to use his camera to capture the life of his family, his village and the damages of climate change. When a violent storm throws him and a Norwegian filmmaker together we see him transform from a father, to community leader to an activist on the global stage.

Thank You For The Rain addresses a range of issues linked to climate change, including climate justice, urbanization, gender equality, education, access to water, climate refugees, and adaptation.

This film is a collaborative film made by Kisilu Musya, a Kenyan farmer, climate fighter and video diarist, and Julia Dahr, a Norwegian filmmaker and activist. Living in completely different parts of the world, Kisilu and Julia found each through this project, and have been working together for more than five years to complete Thank You For The Rain.

[taq_review]

Kisilu: “I had never met a filmmaker before I met Julia and never even seen a full film as I live very remotely with no electricity. It was very interesting to see Julia’s way of working and how she thought my community’s story was so important to the world. When the film team asked if they could stay with me and my family for a month to film, I said yes without any hesitation. But I had one condition: That I could also get a camera to tell my story together with the filmteam.”

Julia: “In my opinion Kisilu having his own camera is what makes this film so special. Kisilu is extremely brave and generous with the audience in his video diaries. He truly gives the audience everything to make sure they feel and understand his fighting spirit and the psychological challenges that he and his community is going through because of climate change. I am proud that we’ve together managed to make a story of hope from the frontline of climate change.”

Kisilu: “Now we are looking forward to bring this film to communities around the world and strengthen the global climate justice movement. I have already started using parts of the film in my own farming community, screening it in schools and churches to engage and share knowledge on how we can build climate resilient communities. I am looking forward to speed up this work and do my level best to help my community and the world.”

18 Hours Film

18 Hours is a 2017 Kenyan fictional film written and directed by Njue Kevin and starring Nick Ndeda, Brian Ogola and Sue Wanjiru. The film follows a rookie paramedic who survives 18 hours in an ambulance for the life of a road accident casualty who is denied admission into hospital.

Zach “Nick Ndeda” works for Raven paramedics services. His job is to handle emergency cases. An emergency call comes in from a witness about an accident that along Highway 89. A pedestrian has been involved in a high speed hit and run while on his way home from work.

Assigned head of the rescue, Zach and his driver Mark “Brian Ogola”dash out of their base and in about 20 minutes, they arrive at the scene. The casualty (whom we make a deliberate action to not see his face) is bleeding from the head and not moving.

Zach and Mark get the casualty into their ambulance and soon after, they are on their way to different hospitals. Joined by Sabina (the casualty’s wife), they each take turns watching over the casualty as they ensure he has sufficient oxygen all the time.

Marred by chaos, Zach’s is determined to keep the victim alive 18 Hours after the accident.

[taq_review]

Production

A Handheld documentary-style film, the directors approach was to film 18 hours in long takes. Since the film takes place in a definite scope of time, shooting in real time added to it an authentic atmosphere. This kind of filming in mind, as opposed to a lot of cutting; ensures the viewer gets fully immersed in the narrow spaces of an ambulance. Creating a claustrophobic feel to the picture.

The visual style seeks to create a portrait-like narrow field of vision giving the viewer an intimate look at the character Zach whose journey we shall follow for the entirety of the film. Zach’s fears make him vulnerable, so, visual elements including low-key lighting, striking use of light and shadow, overexposure and unusual camera placement is something explored in the film.

The score, an original piece by Jacktone Okore, is composed to match the emotional authenticity of the film. The accident victim unable to speak for a majority of the film, and with the film’s little dialogue; the viewer will be soothed, encouraged and like the Victim… given the will to live.

Release

18 Hours is scheduled for a cinema release from 10th November throughout Kenya and East Africa. There after, the film will be available across Africa on select VOD platforms. The film will later make a tour across Europe and North America through a selected list of international film festivals.

 Togeterness Supreme Film

Based on actual events, Togetherness Supreme is the story of Kamau, an artist, searching for change in the midst of tribal tension in the slums. Kamau stands up against his father and his tribe to join the other side with his friend Otieno. Kamau and Otieno fight for political change for those living in dire poverty, but they are caught up in the middle of the ethnic conflict that tears apart their country and, furthermore, they are rivals for the love of Alice, a preacher’s daughter. After a contested presidential election (Kenyan presidential election of December 2007), the slums erupt in violence and Kamau’s world collapses around him.

This film paints a true reflaction of tribalism in kenya after violence followed the Kenyan August elections in 2007. One of the flashpoints was the massive shantytown of Kibera. This film tells the story of the post-election violence through the eyes of those who witnessed it

Fundi-Mentals Film Official HD Trailer

Fundi-Mentals is a 2015 Kenyan erotic comedy that was directed by Alexandros Konstantaras, who was also behind the House of Lungula that featured judge Ian Mbugua, the comedy has already been nominated in this year’s Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards in the best actor in comedy award. The film stars Charlie Karumi, Gerald Langiri and Lizz Njagah.

Production
The word ‘Fundamentals’ is very popular among Kenyans, only that here it bears a different meaning from its original one. The word gained massive popularity after Ken Wa Maria, a local Kamba musician, sang a song entitled fundamentals purportedly referring to the ‘assets’ of a woman and since then the word became Kenyan slang term for the latter. Judging from the title, House of Lungula and now Fundi-mentals, the very common ‘naughty’ and very familiar Kenyan slang for the storylines and this only means that the movies tell the Kenyan story. As the producer Alex Konstantaras revealed, the idea for Fundi-mentals was inspired by a scene during the filming of House of Lungula. “There is a scene where the main character (Gerald Langiri) pretends that he is a fundi who fixes a chimney in order to come out from a difficult situation and that scene inspired me to come up with a character about a fundi who thinks that he can fix anything using unprofessional means,” Alex said. Actress, Lizz Njagah announced in July 2014 that the movie will also be available in Luo and Kikuyu dialects.

[taq_review]
Plot
The storyline of Fundi-mentals revolves around the lives of two Fundis (handymen), Joseph (Gerald Langiri) and his assistant Moses (Charlie Karumi) who like to think of themselves as the best Fundis in Kinoo estate despite their unorthodox methods of fixing things. But the entry of a new Multinational Service Company in town throws all this in jeopardy. To avoid going out of business, they introduce to their female customers a new type of Ex-press service with hilarious consequences.

Best Nail Polish Color to Wear and Trends

Nail trends by the seasons are pretty predictable: soft watercolors for spring, candy-hued brights for summer, and moodier reds, blues, and grays for fall and winter. But then there’s this kind of unique period between the holidays — basically Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day — where chic and sophisticated goes out the window in favor of red-and-green glitter and candy-cane stripes.

Thankfully, we survived… and we didn’t even fall victim to the tacky holiday manicure at all. In fact, we opted for a nail trend that’ll see us well into 2018. It’s fun, it’s festive, but it can also go subtle and low-key. It’s time to get reacquainted with shimmer.

BUTTERY BRONZE

This metallic hue is richer than rose gold and reminds us of an idyllic fall sunset.

MOODY OXBLOOD

You’ll see every shade of red under the sun this season (what with it being the “it” color and all), so save the smoky tones for your digits. (Short-nailed ladies, rejoice: Deeper reds make your nails look extra long.

VIVID AUBERGINE

If deep reds and pretty pinks aren’t really your style, try an eggplant hue instead. Think of it as a transitional color between summer’s vibrant brights and winter’s deepest shades.

NOT QUITE NUDE

Beige, caramel and toffee hues were spotted all over New York Fashion Week, just not on the hands that matched them. Pick a color that’s several shades darker or lighter than your skin tone for a refreshing take on a neutral mani.

SATURATED LAVENDER

Like a grown-up version of millennial pink, this is perfect for those of us who gravitated toward blush-colored manicures all summer long.

MILK CHOCOLATE

On a crisp autumn day nothing beats a warm cup of coco in your hands. Except maybe having that exact shade on your nails.

SHIMMERY MIDNIGHT BLUE

Be still our Lisa Frank-loving hearts; Essie named this fun-loving jewel tone Dressed to the Nineties. Let’s see how long the first bottle will last.

FOLIAGE INSPIRATION

Burnt-orange and deep-red manicures are both on trend, so why not combine them into one super color reminiscent of the changing leaves?

GREIGE

Somewhere between gray and beige, this neutral hue pairs particularly well with another one of our favorite fall trends: pastel outerwear. So feel free to use your manicure as an excuse to splurge on blush leather.

Something Necessary

Something Necessary

Something Necessary opened in cinemas on Thursday 24th January 2013 to a lot of excitement. I was at the premier that was at The Junction and you could feel the anticipation in the air. There was a red carpet, cameras flashing, dressed up ladies and gents and an after party at the Wine Bar and Mercury both at The Junction. The premier was open to members of the public at just Kshs 450 which is a pretty good deal as most premiers are overpriced. So if you weren’t there, I don’t know where you were!

[taq_review]

The film is directed by well-known Kenyan Director, Judy Kibinge and produced by Ginger Ink Films and One Fine Day Films who produced Soul Boy and Nairobi Half Life. It tells the story of Anne (played by Susan Wanjiru) and Joseph (played by Walter Lagat). Anne is a survivor of the post-election violence (PEV) that rocked Kenya in 2007/2008. Her husband is murdered, her son is in a coma and she herself is hospitalized after a gang of youths breaks into their home at the height of the PEV. Joseph is a perpetrator of the PEV and was one of the youths that broke into Anne’s home. Fate unites the two characters when Anne begins to rebuild her home and Joseph is hired as a casual labourer by the Contractor working on Anne’s house.

Nairobi Half Life

Nairobi Half Life is a 2012 Kenyan drama film directed by David “Tosh” Gitonga. The film was selected as the Kenyan entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, but did not make the final shortlist, and is the first time Kenya has submitted a film in this category

At the 33rd Durban International Film Festival, Joseph Wairimu won the award for Best Actor. He also won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Most Promising Actor from the Awards 9th ceremony.

It won the most awards at Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards 2014.

A young man, Mwas (Joseph Wairimu) still lives with his parents in their rural home in Kenya. He makes a living by selling western action films, he dramatically acts and portrays most of the action figures in his films in order to entice his customers. He is an aspiring actor, and when he comes across a group of actors from Nairobi performing in his town, he asks one of them to help him jump start his acting career. But, in return, he is asked to give ksh1000 (approximately US$10) in order for him to be cast in one of the plays. He can only afford ksh500 and is told to take the other 500 with him to the National theatre in Nairobi. He is very excited, and, after receiving some money from his mother, he embarks on his journey to Nairobi with a brief stop over in his town to bade his friends goodbye. He meets his cousin (a gang leader) who gives Mwas an expensive radio system and some money to take to Khanji electronic shop in downtown Nairobi.

[taq_review]

After making his way to Nairobi, he quickly learns that there is more to Nairobi than just opportunities and glamour. On the first day, Mwas loses everything he has to Nairobi thugs and is left stranded and confused especially because he knows no one. He gets arrested and even spends a day in jail. In a twist of events, he meets a Nairobi crook Oti (Olwenya Maina) who becomes a close friend and takes him into his criminal gang. The gang itself specializes in snatch and grab thievery with vehicle parts being their main targets. During this time, Mwas auditions and successfully lands a part in a local play set up by Phoenix Players. He finds himself struggling and juggling the two separate worlds. Mwas finally meets his cousin again who ends up forcing him to steal a car in order to clear his debt. He convinces the gang to move up from stealing parts to stealing cars in order to earn more. During that time, he falls in love with Oti’s onscreen love interest Amina, coming to see her at the lodgings at which she receives customers and even taking her out to the films.
