Ajuma Nasenyana Kenya Model

Ajuma Nasenyana Biography

Nasenyana is a fashion model born in the town of Lodwar, situated in the Turkana District of Kenya.

Her first foray into modeling was in the Miss Tourism Kenya competition in 2003, where she was crowned Miss Nairobi. It was through this competition that she came to the attention of Lyndsey McIntyre of Surazuri Modeling Agency.

Soon afterward, Gamma Photo Agency came to Kenya to do a story on McIntyre’s scouting work and were so taken with Nasenyana that she became the main feature of the story; which later ran in France’s Gala magazine. The pictures taken were compiled into a portfolio and presented to international agency Ford Models, who entered her in Ford’s Supermodel of the World competition.

In November 2003, Nasenyana traveled to Europe to build her portfolio prior to the Supermodel finals in New York City. She soon signed with agencies in London, Italy, Austria, Spain, Ireland, Canada and Sweden.

Nasenyana participated in the New York Fashion Week alongside Naomi Campbell and Alek Wek for designers such as Baby Phat and Carlos Mienes before traveling to Milan to model for fashion houses such as Ungaro during the Italian Fashion Week. Paris was the final destination during the winter show season and British designer Vivienne Westwood made her the lead model in her show.

Since then, Nasenyana has shot several magazine editorials, a video for Lacoste, and a catalogue for Issey Miyake.

In 2011, she was also named AFI African Fashion International’s, Africa Fashion Week Model of the Year 2012.

Besides modeling, Nasenyana has decried the apparent trend in her native Kenya toward rejection of the indigenous Black African physical standards of beauty in favour of those of other communities. In an interview with the Kenyan broadsheet the Daily Nation, she stated that “it seems that the world is conspiring in preaching that there is something wrong with Kenyan ladies’ kinky hair and dark skin[…] Their leaflets are all about skin lightening, and they seem to be doing good business in Kenya. It just shocks me. It’s not OK for a Caucasian to tell us to lighten our skin[…] I have never attempted to change my skin. I am natural. People in Europe and America love my dark skin. But here in Kenya, in my home country, some consider it not attractive.”

As a remedy, Nasenyana has contemplated launching a cosmetic and natural skincare line for women like herself. She hopes that her products will inspire her contemporaries to love their own appearance instead of attempting to alter it through artificial means, such as by skin bleaching.

Why Dressing for Success Leads to Success

Dress better, work better?
A number of recent studies suggest that dressing up for work in a suit or blazer could do wonders for an employee’s productivity, whether going into a negotiation, making a sales call or even participating in a videoconference with business associates.
Using a number of measures, including simulated business meetings at which subjects wore formal and more casual clothing, the studies offer indications that wearing nicer clothes may raise one’s confidence level, affect how others perceive the wearer, and in some cases even boost the level of one’s abstract thinking, the type in which leaders and executives engage.
Michael W. Kraus, an assistant professor of organizational behavior at the Yale School of Management, co-wrote a study for the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 2014 which showed that clothes with high social status can increase dominance and job performance in “high-stakes” competitive tasks.
The study put 128 men ages 18 to 32 with diverse backgrounds and income levels through role-playing exercises—mock negotiations over the sale of a hypothetical factory—to see whether wearing specific kinds of clothing had an effect on the outcomes. The “buyer” in each case came from one of three groups. One group wore business suits and dress shoes. One group wore sweatpants, white T-shirts and plastic sandals. A third group, referred to as “neutrals,” kept wearing the clothing they arrived in. A neutral played the role of “seller” in each negotiation, but no seller also played a role as a buyer.

Suit up
The negotiators were each given a fair-market value for the hypothetical factory, along with other information that would influence their decisions about opening bids and asking prices. In the end, the suits proved much less willing to concede ground during the negotiations, moving off their initial offer by an average of only $830,000, compared with $2.81 million for those in sweatpants and $1.58 million for the neutrals.
What these results show, Prof. Kraus says, is that in competitive, winner-take-all situations, wearing more formal attire can send others a signal “about you being successful and real confident in whatever you’re doing.” Those more casually dressed, on the other side of the table, tend to back down more easily, he says. The ones in formal attire become aware of the respect they are receiving and become more forceful as well, he says.
Other research suggests that the effects of wearing nice clothes can be as much internal as external.
In a study published last year in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, results suggested that people engage in higher levels of abstract thinking when they dress up, compared with when they dress casually. When some 361 participants were asked to complete tasks, the ones dressed more formally engaged in the kinds of abstract thinking that someone in a position of power, like a senior executive, would deploy. After being tested in both formal and casual dress, another 88 subjects were quicker to see the big picture when they dressed more formally. The casual dressers tended to sweat the small stuff.

Penny Winter

Founded in 1997 by Irish designer Penny Winter, the brand’s handcrafted jewellery, made from ethically sourced, re purposed Ankole cow horn, brass, and other raw materials from Africa, is considered one of Kenya’s first sources of African accessories.

Winter started her career at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the English National Opera in London after her studies at the London College of Fashion, where she specialized in period costumes for plays.

After travelling to Kenya on a backpacking adventure she fell in love with the country, making it her permanent home in 1997.

An adventurer and explorer, Winter’s travels provide the perfect opportunity for sourcing interesting materials – whether it’s the downtown backstreets and alleyways of Nairobi, the ruby mines of Voi, the metalworks of Suswa, or the island of Lamu, Winter always takes away something that can later be seen in her designs.

With a designer’s eye, she handpicks uncut stones from genuine stone merchants – sapphires, rubies, tourmaline and opal – and turns it into unique pieces of art. Penny Winter has been featured in major publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Condé Nast Traveler, and has stockists both locally and abroad.

Stunning New Images Celebrate Kenyan Female Icon who Stood up to Colonialists, Mekatilili wa Menza

CNN How do we immortalize people who have impacted the world and made it better in a significant way?

Two photographers, Rich Allela and Kureng Dapel, show us how in a series of images in a project titled “African Queens.”

They recreated the life of a female Kenyan icon Mnyazi wa Menza, who was popularly known among her people as Mekatilili wa Menza.

Mekatilili is celebrated in Kenya for challenging oppressive colonial policies in the early 1900s.

She was fearless and was even said to have slapped one of the British colonial masters in a heated argument in August 1913, according to The Star, a local newspaper in Kenya.

Commenting on the project, Allela said it “represents the strength of womanhood, and inspires the African woman to rise above the inequality and discrimination faced every day.”

Story highlights
Photographers Rich Allela and Kureng Dapel celebrate female African icons in a bold photography project themed “African Queens”
In this collection, they re-imagine fearless Kenyan woman Mnyazi wa Menza (Mekatilili) who challenged colonialism in Kenya
Here are some of our favorite images from the collection.

Mnyazi wa Menza a.k.a Mekatilili was a strong woman known for her fierceness and resistance of colonial rule in Kenya. This photography project represents her life in the Giriama region of Kenya where she lived from the1840s to 1924, according to local sources.

In this reimagination, a fearless Mekatilili is pictured readying for battle, defying the age-long patriarchal norms in Kenyan (and generally, African) societies. Women were not known to be headstrong during that time, but Mekatilili could not be silent about the colonial oppression in her community. While celebrating her achievements, Kenyan newspaper, Daily Nation, described her as the “mad woman who rattled the British.”

Infuriated by the exploitative practices of forced labour and over-taxation by colonial masters in the Giriama community, Mekatilili challenged colonial rule. It is documented that she once slapped a colonial master during a heated exchange over demands made by him from her community. She stood strongly for traditional religious practices and preservation of native customs and traditions, says Kenya’s The Standard.

Mai Atafo Showcasing her Wedding Collection at Asfa2017

Renowned Nigerian fashion designer Mai Atafo showcased his “Weddings by Mai Atafo” collection last Friday at the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards, creating an elusive fairy-tale masterpiece we will all live to remember. The essential beauty Charles Perrault gushes about in those historical fairy-tale books was brought to life by the bespoke man himself. Bridal gowns, jumpsuit gowns and trails graced the runway, each breath-taking than the other. The disarming models were topped by the dapper tailored suits the “Mai Atafo” brand has grown repute for. Sharp-looking, well-tailored and diversely coloured is what one would call these tuxes in a nutshell.

And just when we thought the show was a wrap; we had definitely seen it all, one of the angelic models that had her back towards the audience turns around and puts on a powerful vocal performance leaving the entire room chilled. However, nothing shutdown the show like the totally unexpected ball room dance piece paying homage to the Hollywood acclaimed film, @Beauty and the Beast”

A gentle man in a dazzling suit and beastly mask masqueraded on one side of the runway, with a cunning enchantress in a yellow ballroom dress on the other. They swayed to the musical sensation “Beauty and the Beast” by Emma Thompson as they mirrored the moves in the film which was being played on the big screens. The audience was so stunned by the showcase they applauded loudly all through. The performance concluded with a bow as the beast took off his mask to reveal the one and only, Mai Atafo.

The ASFA 2017 musical performances were lit all thanks to our proud sponsor Bell Jamz that ignited the Bell Jamz Expereince. The roundup was sick, massive and exceptional, it included the Kitone mama, Desire Luzinda, te Kutama King, Fik Fameica, Dancehall king Nutty Neithan, The queen herself Sheeba, dance mama Hellen Lukoma and the explosive youngsar Latinum. This stellar lineup was topped by South Africa’s sensational duo Mafikizolo.
These artistes brought their game, but let’s first go all fashion police on their ensembles. Desire being the kitone mama had to arrive in a body hugging number, a black sequence number at that.

Wan Fam Clothing Brand Recognized International

Kenyan Brand Recognized International Wan fam Clothing, was founded by Jeff Wanjala, 30, and his brother Emmanuel Wanjala, 25, Jeff says, Wan Fam is not an acronym for Wanjala.

The business grew through referrals and word of mouth from a close-knit family of friends – hence the name Wan Fam (a play on one family).

From an initial starting capital of Sh5,000 in 2009, Jeff says, Wan Fam last year registered a turnover of Sh4 million. The fashion start-up deals primarily with urban fashion, including travel and gym bags, sweatshirts, sweatpants, jackets and backpacks

The formidable Maasai tribe have long been known as tall and fierce warriors, but they have recently also become unlikely fashion icons.

A Kenyan clothing label has taken inspiration from the patterns of the traditional Maasai shuka, a cloth usually worn wrapped around the body, to produce clothes and accessories in vibrant tribal prints.

Nairobi-based Wan Fam Clothing was founded by brothers Jeff and Emmanuel Wanjala — the sibling duo say they want to pay homage to Kenya’s Maasai culture by turning a traditional garment into fashionable urban wear.

“Our dominant fabric is usually Maasai shuka,” says Jeff Wanjala. “It’s very ideal because it has like a signature for Africa — you can just see it and notice that this is our brand.”

The two brothers think time is right for Kenyan and other African designers to start looking inward and exploring their own heritage.

“The demand for local products has actually gone up,” says Jeff Wanjala. “People are trying to get more African products, so that means it is actually a big market for local designers,” he adds.

Strong demand

The brothers tried to tap into that demand for authenticity by launching a collection called 1963, commemorating 50 years of Kenya’s independence. They read the consumer mood correctly, and their move resulted an astounding success:

“This was one of the best sales we ever had. We had launched it on a Friday and by Monday we had sold like half the collection,” Jeff Wanjala says.

The brand, which launched in 2009, says it sells up to 100 units a month, with bags carrying a price tag of $18 and jackets $29. Their success has, however, brought them to the attention of copycats:

“Once you make a good product, automatically people start coming in, so the new clients start thinking that you are actually the one imitating the products,” says Jeff Wanjala, but adds that in spite of that challenge the company is making a profit. “Once you create a good product, you create demand,” he says.

Growing trend

Wan Fam Clothing is just one in a string of African brands who have shunned imported aesthetic to focus on their own heritage for inspiration. South African knitwear designer Laduma Ngxokolo creates menswear which incorporates visual motifs of his own Xhosa heritage, and Rwandan jewelery maker Teta Isibo creates handmade pieces which fuse traditional local craftsmanship with contemporary bold designs.

Jeff Wanjala offers a piece of advice for inspiring entrepreneurs looking to start a new company:

“I would tell anyone who wants to start a local brand, don’t compromise on quality. That’s number one. And don’t give up on whatever you love doing. Just do what you love and the rest will follow,” he says.
